Marist’s VanWagner Selected for Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A committee has selected Larry VanWagner, Marist College Director of Aquatics and head coach of the swimming and diving teams, for the Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame’s 2013 class, according to the school’s athletic site.

VanWagner has coached at Marist since 1978 and has accumulated an incredibly impressive résumé there. He has won 26 swimming and diving team championships in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, along with 140 individual swimming championships, 13 swimming athlete of the year awards and five swimming coach of the year awards.

He has earned an 83-15 record with the men’s team in MAAC dual meets and a 50-5 record with the women’s team for an overall winning percentage of 86.9. He has coached 84 All-MAAC Academic Team members.

VanWagner’s record in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference competition is also impressive, with two swimming and diving team championships and 21 individual swimming championships. He earned a swimming athlete of the meet award in 2007 and swimming coach of the meet awards in 2005, 2006 and 2010.

In the Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Conference, the coach has won two championships, led 41 individual men’s swimming champions and won two swimming coach of the year awards.

Overall, VanWagner is 314-156 in dual meets with a 234-124 record with the men and 80-32 with the women. He has coached a swimmer who qualified for the United States in the Olympic trials in 2012.

The Dutchess County Sports Museum started its Hall of Fame in 1977.
