Brewster Veteran to Be Honored at Hall of Fame Ceremony

BREWSTER, N.Y. – Marine Corps veteran Steven Mattson of Brewster, a former staff sergeant, was nominated for induction into state Sen. Greg Ball’s third annual Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

Mattson, who has a wife and three children, served in Iraq and has been in the financial industry for 15 years. He also is a freelance author. His admiration of local history and nature exploration prompted him to write the book “Adventures Around Putnam.”

“The best part of being nominated for this award is the message it sends my kids,” Mattson said. “They see by my example that it is important to give back to the community, and veterans have a special place within our community.”

Mattson is involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Putnam County Land Trust and Cub Scout Pack 1.

“It is my pleasure to accept the nomination of Staff Sgt. Steven Mattson into the Veterans’ Hall of Fame,” Ball said. “Steven has selflessly served our country in Iraq and upon his return has continued to serve through his community service and his ‘Adventures Around Putnam’ initiative. America is not a great country because of its politicians, it’s a great country because of its veterans like Steven.”

Communities throughout the 40th Senate District are selecting nominees Ball’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame. The selected veterans will be honored at a ceremony at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 at Mahopac High School. The public is encouraged to attend.

If you would like to nominate someone, contact your local town or village board or city council or call Ball’s office at 845-279-3773. Ball is chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee.
