Four Injured in Serious Three Car Accident in Town of Southeast

BREWSTER, N.Y. – Route 22 in the Town of Southeast was shut-down for five hours Thursday evening for after a serious three car accident .

New York State Police said that a local couple was driving southbound on Route 22 when they may have had mechanical issues with their vehicle, which caused it to accelerate to a high rate of speed.

Witnesses said that the driver had his hazard lights on and was honking his horn to warn people, according to police.The vehicle continued onto the north-bound lanes and collided head-on with another vehicle that was stopped in a turning-lane. The car that was struck was occupied by one person who was uninjured.

After that collision, the first vehicle remained out of control and continued southbound in northbound lanes where it struck another vehicle head-on, rolled over and came to rest on the northbound lane. The two occupants of the second car that was hit sustained massive injuries, according to police. The driver and passenger of the first vehicle also sustained some injuries.

Three victims were taken to Danbury Hospital and a fourth was taken to Westchester Medical Center in serious condition.  Police have not yet released their identities.
