Tomas Tapas and Bar to Host Pet Social in Wappinger
WAPPINGER, N.Y. – Pet lovers would all agree that their furry companions are more than mere friends, they are family. Tomas and Lynn Monosi, the owners of Tomas Tapas Bar and Restaurant, of Wappinger learned first-hand the support fellow pet lovers give when your furry family member gets loose and runs away. As a thank you to the their new-found friends, the couple is hosting the first Pet Social at their restaurant on Tuesday Jan. 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
After a snowstorm in December the Monosi’s two German Shepherds Remy and Lyska ran away.
“They must have decided to chase a deer that had wandered into my neighbor’s yard,” said Tomas Monosi. “It snowed for the next three days and it was single digit temperatures at night. They ran into the woods and did not come home.”
Monosi had contacted the police and other people he knew in the community, but no one had heard anything about the dogs.
“We live near so many roads as well as the rail trail so they could have gone anywhere,” Monosi said.
Things changed when someone told the Monosis about the Lost Pets of the Hudson Valley website ( http://lostpetshv.org/) and its accompanying Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/LostPetsOfTheHudsonValley)
“We posted on it and within two hours over 1000 people shared the photo we posted,” Monosi said. “Then one person got back to us and they had left a trail of bacon on skewers from the woods to their house to try to lure them out of there if in fact they were in there.”
The idea triggered a similar thought for Monosi who knows that his dogs love salmon.
“Within hours they were home,” he said. “They were hanging out in the woods and they were starving. After four days they came home.”
The experience made Monosi realize how incredible the network of pet lovers who are part of the Lost Pets of the Hudson Valley are and how great it would be to interact with like-minded people in person.
“There are so many people out there sharing photos of lost pets, which I do now as well, and all these people are local,” Monosi said. “I started thinking No. 1, we needed to say thank you to them and No. 2. we should meet up face-to-face. So many times you go back and forth with someone on Facebook, but you have never met them in person.”
Lost Pets of the Hudson Valley has almost 18,000 fans on Facebook and Monosi is inviting them as well as other local pet lovers to participate in the first Pet Social at his restaurant on Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The event is $15 per person and entitles them to tapas and a glass of wine. Additionally, if attendees bring a picture of him or herself with their beloved pet and write their name and phone number on the back it can be submitted into a raffle drawing for a Tomas Tapas Bar and Restaurant gift card.
“Hopefully this can be the start of bigger things too,” said Monosi. “Maybe in the spring when the weather warms up we can hold a similar event but host it outside so people can bring their pets.”
People interested in attending the Pet Social can RSVP to 845-447-1776. Tomas Tapas Bar and Restaurant is located at 900 Route 376 in Wappingers Falls.
